The Scope: One-man Swedish band releases seriously impressive debut album.
I fucking hate Swedish people. Not only do they all get to be freakishly good-looking, live in one of the most beautiful countries on Earth and sound completely hilarious when they talk, now they can add Familjen to their already huge list of awesome home-grown artists like Robyn, The Knife and Eric Prydz. Insane Scandinavian jealousy aside, this is a sweet album. Lead single Det Snurrar I Min Skalle has developed quite the following thanks to high rotation on Triple J and an awesome video. It’s a perfect summer anthem too – uplifting, fun and very danceable. The second half is a bit tougher and darker: Hög Luft is an instrumental interlude towards the end of the album that slows down the tempo but ups the intensity, and Första Sista is electro pop at its best. There is not a lazy moment on the whole CD. The basslines are a whole lot of fun, but intelligent; the guitars are indie without being fluoro. It’s electro indie techno pop that’s impossible not to like. Jonas T Karlsson (the man behind Familjen) has a bright future ahead of him.
The Wrap: You better hope you caught him at Parklife – and if not you’ve still got a pretty awesome consolation with this album.
