The Scope: From the Blue Mountains to Obese Records.
Thundamentals are a four-piece without too much of a buzz outside of NSW yet have found themselves thrust to the forefront as part of Obese Records' next wave of acts. Previously generating a little bit of a buzz on the back of MCs Tuka and Jeswon’s appearance on Chasm’s album, the four piece – also including DJ Morgs and Tommy Fiasko – now arrives with the hype that being signed to Obese generates. This debut EP is a tale of two different groups, when it clicks it is good, really good. When things don’t work though it is a release you would rather be giving away as a Secret Santa present to Jim from finance. The production here is strong throughout, big in sound it survives well on the two instrumental cuts as High & Lows is dope and Hold Up is solid if a little plodding. Lyrically is where things fall down: Storm Warning and Carpe Diem just don’t cut it lyrically, which is a surprise given the artists past output. When it does click for Specialists or bonus tracks Thunda Dub and Disconnect it again becomes enjoyable.
The Wrap: Way more up and down than a seven-track release should be, hopefully the LP will deliver a more cohesive result.
