The festival season has officially begun, with Parklife kicking off the summer music festival snowball. From Busy P and Craze to Lyrics Born and Justice, the Parklife crew sure know how to pull a tight bill. And finally, after nine long years, Adelaide gets a slice of the electro/house/hip hop/breaks/beats/turntablism action. Get set for a day of block-rockin’ beats, sunny weather and shiny, happy people…
Here are Onion’s top eight hot picks of who to see…
BUSY P
We have Busy P - (AKA Pedro Winter) to thank for the French invasion of music. Originally working as Daft Punk’s manager, he now heads the record label that needs no introduction - Ed Banger. He gets busy on the decks playing anything from house to hip hop to rock bangers.
AJAX
Australia’s favourite DJ (after Kid Kenobi of course), Ajax knows how to get the party started. He’s supported big wigs like MSTRKRFT and Daft Punk, probably because he’s been flipping records since ’96. All hail the ‘prince of the decks’.
DJ CRAZE
Three times consecutive world DMC champion pushed Craze to be one of the best turntablists since Q-Bert learnt to scratch a record or two. Heavily influenced by the Miami Bass movement you can happily hear hip hop, D&B and breaks in a Craze-set. It’s like honey to your ears - sweet.
ADAM FREELAND
Once hailed as the ‘king of nu-school breaks’, Adam Freeland is notorious for remixing everyone from Kelis to Orbital thus earning him the title as ‘breakbeat ambassador’ although now expect Mr Freeland to be banging out sounds closer to the Ed Banger and Kitsune vibes.
DERRICK CARTER
Jackin’ Chicago house is right up Derrick Carter’s ally. In fact, he owns the house scene, and whether you’ve seen him at other festivals or shows, he’s definitely a fave not to be missed. Get ready for some arse-shaking boompty boomp from the Chicago master.
JUSTICE
Gaspard Auge and Xaxier De Rosnay are the duo that make up electro gods Justice. You might know them from their infamous crucifix flashing on almost everyone’s MySpace top friends, or from that infectious dance track D.A.N.C.E. well, now you can see them L.I.V.E.
LYRICS BORN
This hip hop heavyweight has frequented Adelaide a couple of times now, but again we are just as excited as the first two times. Co-owner of infamous record label Quannum that he shares with DJ Shadow, LB spits his rhymes with intelligence, complex rhyming, large vocab skills and technique. We will never get enough of his hit Callin’ Out.
M.I.A
Sri Lanken-born M.I.A knows what time it is. She mixes electro clash with Baile-funk, twisted with hip hop in a way no-one comes close to matching her style. Her live shows are as outrages as her fashion sense, and we think she is sure to mesmerise us with her savvy on-stage persona.
