The gargantuan line to enter Electric Circus before it had opened was an early indicator of the appeal of French electro artist Surkin. The venue filled quickly, bars packed five people deep as the crowd got liquored up in preparation for a long night.

Local boys Def Starr kicked off the night, mixing up-tempo disco, which got heavier as Loot & Plunder began with their own personal brand of electronic mayhem. By this point the dance floor was a hectic place to be, and more than a few of the brave hearted people who populated it ended up with a bruise or two as a souvenir.

By the time Surkin started, the energy in the room had reached fever pitch and Electric Circus’ padded wall began to make more and more sense, becoming a protector from injury rather than just a decorative feature. It’s always exciting to see such a great international act in an intimate venue, and the headliner did not disappoint. His set was energetic and consistent, with the patrons seeming to respond particularly well when he played his own tracks such as White Knight Two and Radio Fireworks. Towards the end of his turn at the decks the crowd seemed to diminish, but it’s hard to fault Surkin’s performance so I put that down to a combination of confusion from the end of daylight savings and going a little too hard at the bar earlier in the night.

New kid on the block, That Girl, played the closing set. Despite problems with a malfunctioning mixer, she played really well and to her credit the vast majority of people who remained in the club were on the dancefloor until it closed up. As usual the Electric Circus team put on a brilliant show, with each set being of a high standard, great sound and an amazing vibe.

To many opinions not enough fun! The Electro scene is very simular to the Drum and Bass scene in adelaide and it does kill it! Everyone wants to be a someone in the scene. I bet the successful cats [djs/promoter/artists] in the scene would be happy for you to take over there spot if you were doing a better job but thats the thing not many are its all talk! I have djed and promoted for 5 years and my main focus is to give people a good night out and enjoy themselfs! Wow, long read, this will be my first and last post... Ok i agree with some comments both negative and positive, but what is the point of verbally bashing someone? I personally thought the night was amazing and i agreed with Catty's review. However being a sociopath and going on a verbal rampage on people is not right. Honestly if you did not enjoy the night, maybe it was your own surroundings causing it? if the reason was the music, why did you pay the door charge for the event in the first place, Going to an event you are bound to know what is going to be played right? How the hell did this humble review about your everyday scenester French DJ become a debate over Electric Circus and whether or not it's destorying Adelaide's music scene or not. It's just a club. Yes, cool kids and scenesters hang out there, but they also hang out at other places too. Yes, most of the popular DJs kids are into these days play there, but occasionally they play elsewhere too. I commend them in a way for sparking such debate and obviously exposing the polarity felt within the city about the place. But to all of you who are bagging EC, just remember that any publicity is good publicity and this whole thread is acting like one big advertisement for the place. The Arkaba , Synagogue, Garage, Heaven or Cargo. Did you get hassled???? EC is for young people 18 - 25 and has never professed to be anything other than that, its their market and their demographic, and they do it well. Oh yes I'm back. EC the best club? Financially? No. The woolshed pulls a bigger crowd each week. Musically? No. Theres not much variety there. Other venues run distinctly different night sucessfully. Brand wise? No. Bet your ass HQ is known around the place more than EC, at least. Club setup? EC does a little bit for music in one small pop-culture sector in Adelaide, with half the people there having little or no idea why they are there, other than having been brainwashed on some drugs into thinking you are the best by jumping around to anyone. The best DJ's in Adelaide are NOT at EC. If in 2010 Loot N Plunder and Def Starr don't get 1 and 2 in state and are beaten by someone else, them and EC will rag on the competition, they did until they got those positions. There are many, many excellent musically orientated nights and good DJ's going on in Adelaide, go find them. Crown & Sceptre, Cuckoo, Sugar would be a few of the more well known spots you could venture to. Kissy Sell Out show is a prime example of the kids of EC not being interested in music or artist, but venue and culture. If Kissy Sell Out was at EC, you would have all been choking on how awesome you are.

I think the crux of the issue, is that Adelaide is too small for there to be a strong support for every club without a hatefest ensuing amongst the punters and promoters and someone (usually mr. zadow) getting offended. I think HMC is considered one of the best djs and producers in Adelaide and he doesn't play at EC and contiues to make waves interstate and overseas. Also look at Sonny Fodera. This will be my last comment on here, i do agree with you in certain context LOL, and can well appreciate your point of view, as nobody should be scrutinised on face value alone. But my point does not lay in the quality of people that go there/work there, as i know alot of chops hang out there. But rather my point is about having the option to go there is something you should be happy about, and not discrediting the people who make it happen. Business is business, and Adelaide is a small market, I play there, and i still play at other gigs? And Deejays that have contracted themselves in do so by there own choice, as they feel the sense of loyalty to give something back to the venue that gave them their kickstart. When i go out i make sure my friends are the main people that influenece my night being a success or not, a bartender with an assymetric haircut and shitty attitude kinda adds to the humour of a good night, and lets you know that you are still humble enough to laugh at stupidity and small minded elitists'. Here's how it goes .. there are people who try and present Adelaide to the world as an equal or better city for music/theatre/festivals (Adelaide Festival + Womad are two that are competitive on a world scale). There are people who believe Adelaide can produce and offer world standard events/venues. There are people who write about these events and further promote Adelaide as being on a level playing field to other states like Sydney and Melbourne. There are also people like Filip who loudly and effectively promote South Australia and South Australian events and personalities, who also personally feel disappointed if Adelaide lets itself down and puts on an event that isn't to the standard we are capable of. The problem with Adelaide is, and always has been, is that no matter how our state is presented to the world there's always going to be the small, nasty, insignificant people wanting to project negativity wherever they feel it's needed. So, sadly, these people trying to be positive and excited about Adelaide often give up and move interstate. Mathematically it makes sense - positive, inspiring people leave ... negative, controversy seeking people stay = excessive number of negative, controversy seeking people. I have no clue about the Adelaide nightclub scene. Or for that matter the music scene. I published a tourist magazine for 9 years, and I know a lot about theatre - and Adelaide. I'm really old and I can assure you this is the same stuff that's always been around and I'm sure has helped to hold Adelaide back in some areas. I read this because someone told me Filip was personally attacked, and I was disgusted. I'm more than disgusted now I've read this. Oh, Catty - I did read your review - awesome work.

I live in Melbourne now and the amount of International acts that are here every weekend is fucking amazing and its a shame Adelaide doesn't get it as much. What I don't understand is, why is it when you finally get an amazing producer in - you bag the fuck out of him? Look this international dj comment is quite annoying they aren't the only people bringing international djs to Adelaide. Hq, Sugar, Cuckoo, Techphonics, Apple all these places and events have brought international djs out and continue to do so regularly. Just over the weekend there was Kissy Sellout, Dapyk and Mark E all who weren't at EC. I suppose though a lot of EC regulars wouldnt know who these artists are as they aren't cool (except for kissy sellout who they wouldn't have gone to see as it wasn't at EC)

Hmmm.. I reckon Id be labeled as one of those pretentious people who only go to EC (well these days its actually really Limbo) & look down upon other clubs... Well, Im now past the mid 20's. I need a slower pace... a place like Limbo provides that for me. Why have I been attending EC though so loyally for the past 5 years??? (And before onelove it was Vodka Bar that I frequented religiously)... I will tell you all honestly, and its something the majority of you don't face. Bigotry. Most other places are rougher, and let a rougher, more intolerant type of punter in through the doors. Ive tried them all. But EC was always a place of tolerance, nice kids and friendly staff. I have ALWAYS felt safe to be myself there. there ar enow other places which are getting better and I feel fine at, vodka once again, Garage, Apple too... but for a long time this hasnt been the case.

Dubfire has already bagged the shit out of us and will never return to adelaide and im not surprised if other internationals in the future are reluctant to come here. Man i work at circus and i dont take offence to what has been said. Opinions are fine why get so defensive. If you enjoyed it fine, if you didnt fine. I got bored after reading half of these comments so i am not sure if this has been covered but Catty Fox is an amazing reviewer. Her review was honest. Catty has done many reviews for Onion and i have not read all, however i do recall reading a few where she has said negative things about EC, Limbo, or Rocket's way they handled that said night. She has never felt the need to BASH the venue not because i think she is 'to scared to say a bad thing about EC' but because i think she is a good person. I think everyone should stop taking things so personal and realise other people have different opinions and if they choose to voice it, good on them.

Loot&Plunder rightfully deserve the #1 spot in Adelaide and Def Starr have never talked themselves up about their ranking in the popularity contest that is ITM. They would be the first to admit that such polls are ridiculous.In fact it was their remix of Phoenix that shot them to popularity. I like some of the acts that play at EC, but a lot of people who go there are so pretentious. They will never leave their "favourite" venue even when an act they like is playing elsewhere - just because of the stigma that is given to other venues by people like themselves. I enjoy watching Loot and Plunder. But any DJ duo needs to offer more, 3 decks at a minimum and at least a few live acapella/loops etc. And their sets have sounded the same for the last couple of years. But hardly anyone at EC would actually notice this. But at least Loot and Plunder got gigs by playing music, Def Starr got them by spamming everyone and 'hyping' themselves up. Oh and boys, stop crapping on about being #2 in the ITM poll. It's just a popularity contest - no reflection of your actual ability. Maybe stick to the studio like your great buddy Surkin. For the record 15 year old Surkin is a MUCH better producer than DJ/Controller of the almighty Macbook. So If you went expecting greatness, you would have got a chain smoking, pre-pubescent boy behind a laptop.

I was there and it was a great vibe! Everyone who was there came to see Surkin the french producer. Whether he plays on vinyl, cds or Ableton doesn't really matter.
