Local hip hop DJ Sanchez proved cancelling an interstate gig to compete at the Fringe Spin Off was the right decision, as the young turntablist took out the DJ competition last night.
The popular DJ won the tightly fought contest at the packed Sugar nightclub with a large support group that crowded the DJ after host Shep announced he was the winner. Sanchez was the first DJ on the night hitting the decks just after 9.30pm and soon got the crowd (who were standing with their arms crossed at the start of his set) onto the dancefloor with his highly skilled mix of golden age hip hop and anthem club hop. Other DJs on the night included Bunyip, Adrian Van Der Ploeg and the Kartel Kids. Despite the latter busting out an entertaining set, which included jumping up on the decks to get the crowd excited, the four judges went with Sanchez, who is the first pure hip hop DJ to take out the crown in the event’s four-year history.
Sanchez now will perform to more than 80,000 people at the free Fringe Opening Party with Triple J favourites Art Vs Science, Killaqueenz, The Killgirls and Canvas Kites at Rymill Park on Fri Feb 19.
