Exclusive sneak peek at the 2010 Fringe Guide

Rip It Up Digital takes you through some of the unmissable action heading our way for the 2010 Adelaide Fringe ahead of the Fringe Guide’s release tomorrow (Sat Jan 9).

The 2010 Adelaide Fringe is set to be the biggest yet. And we’re not just saying that. We’re talking jet-black, straight edged emo fringe here. Taking to the stage this year will be 705 different events, all offering a unique slice from various artistic genres from comedy to cabaret, theatre, visual arts and so much more.

From Fri Feb 19 to Sun Mar 14, the Fringe Festival takes over Adelaide. As already reported on Rip It Up Digital, the Fringe Parade Opening Night will take place in Adelaide’s East End on Fri Feb 19. The massive party will feature live street performers, a parade (naturally) from Dequetteville Tce to Pirie St and a huge free concert headlined by Sydney three-piece Art Vs Science.

The Garden of Unearthly Delights has been one of the true drawcards of recent Fringe Festivals and it returns in 2010. As always, it opens a week before beginning of the Festival (Thu Feb 11) and will host some of the finest talent on offer at this year’s Fringe.

Comedy is always well supported at the Fringe and this year there’ll be enough to keep you in stitches well into 2011. Old favourites such as Arj Barker, Wil Anderson, Adam Hills and Peter Hellier all make returns while new faces like Rich Fulcher of Mighty Boosh fame, Irish comedy rock act Dead Cat Bounce and the wonderfully bizarre Red Bastard from America will leave you with sore cheeks and split sides.

One of the best things about the Adelaide Fringe is all the weird and wonderful music it attracts to the city (far too much for this uncultured plebe to get his head around). But highlights taken hastily from the guide include C.W. Stoneking at The Spiegeltent; Dan Sultan, also at The Spiegeltent; The Polyphonic Spree as part of the SoCo Carnivale at Thebarton Theatre; and the almighty Future Music Music Festival, which commandeers The Garden of Unearthly Delights on Mon Mar 8 and boasts the likes of The Prodigy, Empire of the Sun and Franz Ferdinand on the bill.

Other picks for this year’s Fringe include the return of the original jackasses The Tokyo Shock Boys and their bizarre, self-harming show; the cabaret performance of Lady Carol, star of last year’s Company of Strangers; and the epic stage production Scaramouche Jones, which enjoyed sell-out shows at the ’08 and ’09 Edinburgh Fringe.

So all in all, this looks like it’s gonna be one pretty big Fringe, so big you’ll need diamond-coated scissors to cut it off when you’re done with it.

The 2010 Adelaide Fringe takes place from Fri Feb 19-Sun Mar 14. The Fringe Guide comes out in tomorrow’s edition of The Advertiser.

How good is it to see "scootikins" sprouting his mouth off again with his tripe, the only view on comedy.

You don't have to buy the Advertiser to get a copy of the Guide though - it's also available at BankSA branches, Foodland, bars, clubs and even the Rip It Up office! Glad to see that my favourites such as Wil Anderson, Lehmo and George Kapiniaris are all coming back to annoy us with their take on 'comedy'. Christ.
